Natural cowhides vary from Tricolors, Brindles, Black and white, Brown and white and more… Choosing the right color and tones will enhance your home or office add a touch of luxury to any décor.
- First, think about the size of the area the cowhide rug will be used in. How big is the room? How big is the coffee table that will rest on top of it? Do you mind if some of it is underneath furniture? What Colors are in the room, what contrast you wish to achieve. Straight away this will narrow down the field to a much less daunting number of options.
A Large hide is about 30 to 39 square feet, to give you an idea that is a hide that is up to 7 Feet lengthwise.
An Extra Large hide is about 40 to 49 feet, to give you an idea that is a hide that is more to 7 Feet lengthwise. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE MEASURE ON THE LONGEST POINT OF THE HIDE. - It is important to understand what is your maximum budget for your cowhide rug. Size and uniqueness are the biggest price factors. A smaller hide will cost less than a larger hide, and a common hide will cost less than a rare and unique hide.
- Think about what colors you like and what you think will go with your interior décor. Be open minded, sometimes it is a color that you have not considered that is actually perfect. Be open to highly contrasted colors.
- Don’t torture yourself over these decisions, go with your instinct, your ‘gut’ feelings. Each cow hide is unique, they are a natural product and no two are alike. You might have seen a cowhide rug in a friend’s house and thought “that’s what I want!” but be realistic and take a “that’s close enough” approach because cows don’t have twins. The more relaxed you are about your selection criteria, the easier and more enjoyable the whole process will be.
- Don't listen too closely to your friends comments, this is about your taste and preferences, not theirs. You are the one who has to live with it and love it. Sometimes people do not realize how much a superficial comment made to a friend, who has asked for their advice, can affect how we feel about something.

The Right Size
Cowhides have a natural organic shape, which means that the shape is irregular. Our professional artisans have the experience to cut the rawhide in the most symmetrical shape as possible. Remember that these measurements are based on the longest point of the cowhide.
- A Large hide is about 30 to 39 square feet, to give you an idea that is a hide that is up to 7 Feet lengthwise.

Cleaning your Cowhide
Include your cowhide rug, calf skin, furniture or pillows in your normal cleaning routine, simply vacuum with the power reduced to the rug setting and the vacuum head brush in the down position or give rugs and cushions a shake outside to remove dust and small dry particles of dirt. Rotate your rug or move to a different location from time to time so that it wears evenly.
You can wipe cowhide smoothly in the direction of the hair with a damp (but not wet) cloth with mild soap and water. Do not soak the hide as it will be too wet. DO NOT wash in a washing machine or dry clean.
Brushing with a hard plastic bristle brush or broom helps to keep the hair soft and fluffy and helps to remove dirt and larger particles trapped in the hair.
For common spills like red or white wine, coffee, tea, juice, food, soup, urine and vomit - soak up spills with a paper towel or sponge immediately. Remove solid matter with the blunt edge of knife by scraping gently in the direction of the hair. Then wipe with a damp (but not wet) sponge or cloth using mild soapy solution. You can wipe and rub the hair vigorously in any direction. Finally clean with a damp cloth using diluted 5% white vinegar and 95% water solution, this balances the PH levels and helps to eliminate unpleasant odors.
For oil based stains like fat, grease, lipstick, tar and chewing gum - Remove solid matter with the blunt edge of knife by scraping gently in the direction of the hair. Then apply Eucalyptus oil directly to the affected area on a soft cloth by dabbing gently. Finally wipe with a damp (but not wet) sponge or cloth using a mild soapy solution. You can wipe and rub the hair vigorously in any direction. We cannot guarantee that this will remove your oily stain, but it the best method of trying. This is done at your own risk.
On a sunny day you can put your cowhide outside with the underside facing the sun. Store them in a fresh dry place, preferably rolled around a tube core with a clean cotton sheet to protect from dust and dirt while in storage. We recommend that white, cream, beige or other light colored cowhides be sprayed with a light coating of colorless nubuck and suede water proof spray from a cobbler or shoe shop when they are new. If you clean the cowhide with soap and water you can re-spray the surface again for added protection.

Natural Cowhide Variations
- Tri Color: These are considered the most beautiful and unusual hides as they are all so unique. Colors might range from dark to light browns, as well as white and black tones.
- Brindle: Also know as tiger cowhides, have stripes of browns and black widthwise along the spine. Colors are usually chocolate brown solid and chocolate brown along with some white on the edges.
- Black and white: This is the most common color when someone thinks of cowhides. It is bicolor and carry a variation of patterns of black and white
- Brown and white: This is also a common bicolor cowhide that carries a variation of patterns of brown and white.

Patchwork Cowhide Rugs
A patchwork cowhide rug is a way of injecting some cowhide into your interior without having the natural cowhide shape. They are also great when a natural cowhide would not be big enough like under a large dining table or in a large lounge. Some people simply prefer the straight edge lines of a patchwork cowhide as opposed to the natural curvy form of a natural shaped cowhide.

Cowhides products are natural, this means that natural hides are not manufactured. We hand pick and meticulously examine each rug before it is shipped. If you find any patches on the hair, it is a normal process just reinforcing the natural hair. Also, hides might have a stamp on the hair; it is a regulation from the farm.

No, no, no! Cowhides are a by-product of the farming/meat industry. The cows were farmed for meat and milk. eCowhides is against animal cruelty. They are tanned using the chrome technique so the back of the leather is a blue grey color. This is the best technique for a soft and floppy leather result. They have not been treated with, and contain no residues of PCP, AZO-coloring agents, Chrome VI, formaldehyde and nickel. The tanneries use an environmentally responsible method of waste treatment that exceeds industry standard requirements.
